Quick comparison
| Dimension | Updog | Bootstrapware Importer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Importer plus in-browser spreadsheet editor | Upload, map, preview, valid rows via onComplete |
| Where files stay | Browser (their claim; see updog.tech) | Browser. File bytes never go to Bootstrapware |
| Scale guidance | Workers and canvas grid; they market about 1M rows | Opt-in Worker parse. Prefer thousands of rows. Huge batches out of scope |
| Preview vs edit | Typed cells, undo, fill, formulas (their product) | Read-only preview. Enum value map, Include, error CSV. No cell editor |
| Mapping memory | Their product | Confirmed maps saved in browser localStorage |
| Frameworks | React and Web Component (their docs) | React plus a thin Web Component wrapper |
| UI strings / a11y | i18n overrides; they claim ARIA grid / WCAG work | strings override map, dir for RTL. Labels, status, and alert. Plain HTML table |
| Free path | Free to 100k production rows/month, then Team | Free local fields and test keys forever. No row meter |
| Paid production | $100 / production domain / month (checked October 6, 2026) | $19.99 / workspace / month. Stack: 2nd product 25% off, later 35% |
| Hosted schema | Their dashboard and domain licence | Publish columns without redeploy. Sessions may report counts, not file contents |
Where Updog is stronger
- Inline spreadsheet editing (typed cells, undo, fill, formulas) versus our read-only preview.
- Scale narrative: canvas grid; they market about one million rows. We recommend thousands even with an opt-in Worker.
- ARIA-grid / WCAG AA claims on their grid. We ship labels, status, and alert on a plain table and do not claim that.
- Optional BYO AI matching/chat (their product).
- A free production row allowance (100k rows/month) before a domain bill.
Where Bootstrapware Importer is stronger
- Price for the narrow upload job: Production $19.99 per workspace, not $100 per production domain.
- Forever-free local fields in code. No account required to evaluate or ship that path.
- Published schema, live keys, webhooks, and session counts without putting file bytes on Bootstrapware.
- Agent-native docs (AGENTS.md, MCP) for “add a CSV importer this weekend.”
- Enum value mapping, custom validators, string overrides, a thin Web Component, and opt-in Worker parse — without turning the embed into a spreadsheet.
- Browser localStorage mapping history. Their alternative page denied this; it is wrong.
- Stack discount with Feedback, Chat, and the other products (2nd 25% off list, later 35%).
Architecture
Both products parse in the browser and hand your app rows through a completion callback. Bootstrapware never puts file bytes, filenames, or row payloads on its API. In Production hosted mode the widget may start and complete an operational session with counts, file type, and duration. See sessions and privacy.
Updog describes workers and a canvas grid for large files. Bootstrapware can parse on an opt-in useWorker with a main-thread fallback. Limits do not invent a hard row cap. Preview shows the first 100 rows; counts cover the file. Prefer customer uploads in the thousands of rows. Multi-hundred-MB workbooks and million-row in-browser editing are out of scope. We are not changing that architecture because an alternative page framed scale as the only axis.
Confirmed column maps are remembered in this browser's localStorage, keyed by schema fingerprint and optional importerId. The next matching file prefills the map step. File contents are not stored. See column mapping.
Pricing (Updog checked October 6, 2026)
Updog pricing listed Free at $0 with 100,000 production rows a month (localhost and listed preview hosts do not count) and Team at $100 / production domain / month. The first paid domain covers two; each extra domain adds $100. They bill domains, not seats or file bytes. Some other Updog alternative pages still show an older $19 figure. This page uses their live pricing URL, not those pages.
Bootstrapware Importer is Free for local fields and test keys, then Production $19.99 per workspace per month for live keys, published revisions without redeploy, webhooks, and multiple live importers. There is no BYO / Hosted split and no per-row invoice. Session counts are operational. A second paid Bootstrapware product is 25% off that product's list; the third and later are 35% off list. Always .99.
Those dollars are not the same unit (workspace vs production domain, control plane vs row allowance). If $100 per domain is cheap next to an editor and a million-row grid, stay with Updog. If you need a focused embed and a $19.99 dashboard, we are the narrower product.
Who should choose each
Choose Updog when the product is an embedded spreadsheet: users edit cells, you need their ARIA-grid story, or you routinely load million-row files in the browser.
Choose Bootstrapware Importer when customers upload CSV, XLSX, or TSV into a SaaS, map columns, see a preview, and your backend receives valid rows. You want schema in code for free, or a Production dashboard without redeploying, at small-company price, possibly next to other Bootstrapware embeds.
Try it and migrate
There is no sales call. Install @bootstrapware/importer, pass fields, and send onComplete to your API. The demo and quickstart are enough to judge the embed. Coming from Updog, you will lose in-grid editing. You keep browser-side files and gain a $19.99 published-schema control plane. We are not affiliated with Updog.
What we will not claim
We will not claim Bootstrapware matches Updog's editor, canvas grid, or 1M-row benchmark. We will not call Updog expensive without the domain and row context above. We will not imply their client-side model is insecure. We will not invent ARIA-grid semantics or WCAG AA. Their alternative page is updog.tech/alternative-to-bootstrapware; this page links our primary docs instead of repeating their table as fact.
FAQ
Is Bootstrapware a Updog alternative?
Yes when you want a focused React CSV and Excel upload: map columns, validate, preview, then send valid rows to your app. No if you need an embedded spreadsheet editor or a million-row in-browser grid.
Does Bootstrapware keep mapping history?
Yes, in this browser. After Preview rows, field-to-header mappings are saved in localStorage (schema fingerprint plus optional importerId, about 20 fingerprints LRU). File contents are not stored. Updog's alternative page that said no mapping history is kept is wrong.
Can users fix rows without re-uploading?
They cannot edit cells as a spreadsheet. They can remap columns, remap unknown enum values to allowed options, uncheck Include on valid rows, filter invalid rows, and download import-errors.csv.
Does Importer have BYO and Hosted plans like Chat?
No. Importer is Free local fields and test keys, then Production $19.99 per workspace per month for live keys and published schema. Spreadsheet bytes stay in the browser on both paths.
What does Updog charge?
On October 6, 2026, updog.tech/pricing listed Free (100,000 production rows a month) and Team at $100 per production domain per month. Some older Updog alternative pages still show $19. Recheck their pricing page.
Does Bootstrapware process files on a Web Worker?
Optionally. Pass useWorker to parse on a Worker when the browser provides one, with a main-thread fallback. Docs still recommend thousands of rows, not million-row canvas editing.
